This family-friendly event is one not to be missed and offers arts, crafts, and exhibits that are educational, fun-filled and entertaining!

Founders Day will under go a name change as we honor Jose DeRivera for his many contributions to our island community. More activities for the kids have been added along with the traditional island flea market, the Hog Roasters famous Ox Roast and those giant strawberry shortcakes whipped up by members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
The biggest undertaking in some time, however, comes the weekend of June 21st when Put-in-Bay Pirate Fest gets underway with the return of the U.S. Brig Niagara.
The Niagara will sail into port here in June, and the public is invited to a picnic in DeRivera Park to meet the Captain and Crew of Niagara, from 6 to 8 p.m. The Put-in-Bay Visitors and Convention Bureau in partnership with Pepsi America, The Perry Group and Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial will host this potluck.
Burgers and hot dogs will be provided along with paper products, soft drinks, and water. We ask that you bring a dish to share and some good old island hospitality.
Pirate Fest begins Friday, with the “Pirate Invasion” at 4 p.m. The Pirates will be sailing into port as the Brig Niagara departs Fox’s Dock (Jet Express Dock) for their 4 to 9 p.m. training sail around the islands. Knock the dust off your dreads and pieces of eight and meet downtown on Fox’s dock for the dramatic developments.
A Mayor’s Decree will officially open Put-in-Bay Fun and the Put-in-Bay Pirate Fest activities as soon as the seafarers swarm the island. We may have to call in re-enforcements from Perry’s Victory to protect the women and children.
Event chairmen Teri Winchester and her grown-up Pirate, Ty Winchester, will be dropping by island businesses asking them to fly the skull and crossbones for the weekend’s activities. There are also plans for treasure hunts on Friday.
Saturday there will be a Pirate Marketplace in DeRivera Park. Captain Jack Sparrow, okay the guy who on the Jack Sparrow look-a-like contest sponsored by Disney, will be here with some of his mates from noon-4 p.m. and they plan to demonstrate the fine art of sword fighting. A walking parade will follow with a Costume Contest for the kids, adults, and groups with prizes for the most pirate-y costumes.
There are also plans to storm several ferry boats, meet Captain Morgan and the Morganettes and have an opportunity to have your photo taken with some of the costumed characters.
Saturday evening, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. the Perry Group and Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial will host an 1812 Living History aboard Niagara. Re-enactors will give music, dance and cooking demonstrations from the 1812 period.
This event will take place on Fox’s Dock and aboard Niagara. Appetizers and soft drinks will be provided. All the proceeds from this event will benefit the community Bicentennial Commission for activities during the bicentennial of the Battle of Lake Erie Islands Historical Museum beginning June 5.
Sunday the Pirate Marketplace will be open and there will be activities for the kids and hopefully a visit from “Pirate Pete” who teaches kids about safe boating and safety around the water. There are also plans for a cardboard regatta. On Monday, a fundraiser that includes the “Pirate’s Trail,” “Walking the Plank” and a dinner Cruise are scheduled along with the official closing ceremonies. The Niagara will conduct “Day Sails” on June 26, 27 and 28, and give tours of the ships well.
