The Ohio State Stone Laboratory Put-in-Bay
The Ohio State Stone Laboratory is Ohio State University’s island campus here on Lake Erie. They host over 25 college credit courses as well as workshops every summer. The Lab is located right on the banks of Lake Erie where students and professionals are invited to enroll in classes. This popular Put-in-Bay Attraction is a favorite for young and old alike and is very educational in nature.
State Stone Laboratory Particulars
Several different courses are offered here including introductory courses to workshops open to both job seekers and working professionals. Those that are interested can apply online. Scholarships are available for both high school and college students, College level students can also apply to be lab assistants in exchange for free room and board!
The lab is funded by the Ohio Sea Grant and for over 30 years this vital grant has worked to protect the environment of Lake Erie and the other Great Lakes. Stone Laboratory and the Ohio Sea Grants Strategic Plan focuses on four areas:
· Field-Based Oceanography
· Introduction to Biological Studies- Local plants
· Ecology and Conservation of Birds
· Lake Erie Sportfishing
High school students must have completed their sophomore year in order to qualify for these courses. Completing one course of the biology of environmental science prior to the course start date is also required.

· Lake Erie Sportfishing Workshop
Stone Laboratory Research
The Ohio State Stone Laboratory is located close to Kayak the Bay, Oak State Park, and the Aquatic Visitor Center. Put-In-Bay offers visitors a wide range of activities designed for those who have environmental interests. Gibraltar Island can be seen right off the shore.
The Aquatics Visitor Center also includes workshops designed for children too young to attend the Ohio State Stone Laboratory. You can visit their website to learn more about these.

Kayak the Bay is a way to really soak in the beauty of the island and see the back side of the Stone Laboratory. On your way to or from the laboratory, you will pass by Put-in-Bay Fishing Charters as well as Oak Point State Park, both great places to check out if you plan on doing a little Put-in-Bay Fishing while you are here!
