Kimberly’s Carousel at Put-in-Bay

A well-loved fixture of downtown Put-In-Bay, Kimberly’s Carousel has been on the island since 1917. Built by Allan Herschell, this vintage carousel looks almost entirely the same as it did when it was built, over 100 years ago! The brightly colored animals wrap around the spinning Kimberly’s Carousel cherry red and white striped top. It is one of the few remaining carousels of its kind in the United States. Both kids and adult’s lineup to ride this island institution. Ride on a chicken, a pig, or Pete the Perch, the island favorite! Music fills the air daily as the ride goes around.

Kimberly’s Carousel History

The Allan Herschell Company was the most prolific manufacturer of amusement park rides, particularly carousels. They specialized in portable machines for carnivals. The company produced over 3,000 hand carved wooden carousels at the beginning of the 20th Century. They were known all across the country for the beautifully detailed high-quality work.

Over time, the ride began to fall into disrepair. The Put-In-Bay luminary, George Stoiber made it his mission to restore the island staple so he and his wife, June, purchased it and restored it to its former glory. Out of 36 original horses, only 12 remained and were in extremely poor condition. The couple decided to add new animals, including Pete the Perch, which June painted herself. It was a true labor of love as the couple understood how important the Kimberly’s Carousel was to the island’s history.
