The favorite attraction for all is the Perry’s Cave tour. The limestone cavern is one of a kind, with it being the only location on the island to have an underground lake and intact roof. The underground lake is very important to the history of the island as it was once a source of fresh drinking water. Historians have reported that the cave was discovered during the war of 1812 by Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry. Many of his troops had become ill and they were in desperate need of drinking water. It’s been reported that this fresh water helped to bring those sick soldiers back to health.
In 1892 the Infamous Hotel Victory found this underground lake to be useful as well. The Largest hotel in America at the time burned to the ground in 1892. Pieces of this structure such as the natatorium can still be seen at what is now South Bass State Park.
